Meet Your Hosts
Areca Smit
Areca Smit is Associate Director for Electronic Media at UC Hastings Law. Previously, she was Chief of Staff to the Dean of Berkeley Law. She has served as executive director, project manager, and consultant to a variety of nonprofits and small businesses and has significant nonprofit board leadership experience. Previously, she was a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. State Department and has an MBA in sustainable enterprise and a BFA in conceptual art.
Drew Amerson
Before joining LexLab, Drew was a Visiting Assistant Professor at UC Hastings. He taught courses in intellectual property and entrepreneurship and managed the Startup Legal Garage. His early career included years at Sidley Austin, Taylor & Company, and clerking for the Honorable Joan N. Ericksen, United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. A pioneer in legal innovation, Drew founded a startup in 2011 that created an online community to connect law firms and companies with highly skilled freelance attorneys.
Drew is a graduate of Columbia Law School and has a BA in Philosophy from Carleton College.
